Review # 1 was written on 2019-09-07 00:00:00 Carlton June Read this book prior to taking a group to Cuba for a study tour of the health sector. It is now dated, but I remember really appreciating it and the perspective of the author at the time. When one visits Cuba, it is easy to fall in love with the place, people and even what the government was able to accomplish in the fields of health, education, music/arts and sports, and without resources. Much of what was accomplished was for political reasons--Castro's opportunity to thumb his nose at the US because he was able to do things that we couldn't like reduce maternal and infant mortality, train an abundance of doctors, make "health for all" or primary health care a reality and many other things. The author is sympathetic to the Cuban cause and people, but not deluded. She understood that the Cuban people had suffered/were suffering for their miracles, and that their future would be difficult no matter what happened after Castro's death. I recommend the book if you want a thoughtful and thorough political history on the enigma that is Cuba's health system.

Review # 2 was written on 2015-08-30 00:00:00 Philip Horton Rob's work is doing a "book club" which basically means they are bribing employees to read books that they think will improve the atmosphere at work. I hope it works. I am reading this for his work book club thingy. *Update* I didn't finish it. I'm having a hard time reading much that isn't recreational & fun to read rightnow. :( Sheesh. Sorry :)
