This book is not only for children. Anita Rodriguez’s books are the most magical books I have ever experienced. Her paintings, her stories, her visions are filled with so much beauty, vibrancy, and spirit. It is like being teleported into the world with Aunt Martha.

I'm really torn about this book. Really 2.5 stars. The artwork is unpolished and folksy, which I like very much. I like the premise of the story, that a poor black girl escapes to the city to make her way in the world and that a coin she found as a child may have certain mystical properties, however the story felt incomplete. The ending asks questions outright rather than leading the reader to ask the questions themselves.
