Review # 1 was written on 2009-11-20 00:00:00 Stacy R Barton A primer for those interested in Opera who have not studied it in depth. Orrey's Opera is a scholarly history of opera survey. It beginnings in the late 16th century outlining its origins; often silly play acting and fun loving dramas similar to today's performance art. Enter the "high" Cardinals in the Catholic Church who loved the oratorio. (Of course they did, and still do since the Mass is also performance). The present, focuses on the changes in the styles, costumes and theater architecture. Definatley a helpful tool for the novice Opera lover. However, I honestly have learned more from reading the periodical, Opera News. |
