It seems the positive reviewers did not read this book too thoroughly. The book was assembled using notes that were never actually put into an actual book format, as the authors admit. Chernev had always been sparse in his explanations, but said explanations were enough to make the necessary points. A number of the notes in this volume, however, are not only unnecessary ("How embarrassing!" is repeated in several endings for no reason), but seem like they were intended to be replaced by better ones-if the author had lived to correct them. But worst of all is the fact that several of the endings had the wrong chessboard layouts with the wrong notes. That was a crass mistake any posthumous author should have caught. Personal experience has told me that if an author has not published something they had written, there is usually a very good reason for that fact.

Irving is a superb chess writer as have been attested by countless chess lovers. This book in the study of end games strategy is brilliantly written and is concise for the usual readers to fathom.
