Review # 1 was written on 2017-11-23 00:00:00 Joseph Stumpf I had hoped for a few more stories. The tales of how stories used to be told and the tradition around storytelling and how people went to each other houses were very interesting. And it is also interesting to see how the stories migrated with the Gaelic speaking people, but I got the feeling that Joe MacNeil must have had so many more stories inside him, that this was a lost opportunity to take them all down. I felt quite frustrated when I put this book down to know that there wasn't more to it. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-01-17 00:00:00 Gladys Stockmeyer I enjoyed this one more for the art of storytelling than anything. The descriptions of old fashioned ceilidhs is insightful, and the stories themselves are old, disjointed and definitely read like tales passed on orally for decades. They meander and many of them are cross-pollenated with old myth. |
