Soooooo I have this petty competitive streak that flowers like algae bloom in a scummy pond on this site. I giggle at the fringes of a romance book reading group, where folks are serious about exploring the genre for understanding and grasping the scope & variety within it (or were arm-twisted into joining, or were curious and ended up somberly participating, or maybe just can't bring themselves to drop from the group because then the rest might make fun, and there are a bunch of fellow gigglers). For the most recent selection, I campaigned for the book with the hilarious title* instead of the potentially interesting zombie romance novel. I WIN! But I think I also lost because my pony is pretty bad.... ...anyway. For the past couple books and for this recent win (I WIN!), I guess I championed the cause of cheesy smut too well. I held my smutty banner high (and I WON!). My name was Eh? S. Eh! where the S. stood for Smut. Smutsmutsmutsmutsmutsmut. And I was answered with a gift of smut. Uh, thanks? :o) Yes, let this be a lesson to me. I'll stop going on about the s-word. In recognition of the one who undoubtedly had an uncomfortable experience in purchasing this, I read this work of smut. Well, I skimmed it. And groaned in exasperation (not pleasure ;o). And then skipped forward, still catching words here and there, with "nipple" and "cock" springing out everywhere. Sigh. That wasn't even intended to be a pun. What I gather from the skim, the heroine is supposed to be a strong woman who determines her own fate and steers her destiny to her true love...this is extremely similar to the parody I just read, except less self-winking. The smutty bits are many. But it draws the line at S/M, having the heroine escape a situation where the bad guy tries to make her be M to his S. There's a noble lineage discovered and "shocking" uncovering of siblinghood (is that a word?), with requisite happy ending. I promise not to interfere with future votes. No more smut, thank you. *When I searched for this, instead of using the "add book/author" link, the target popped right up but there was a line at the top asking "did you mean Pilgrimmage to India?" C'mon, search function, you did good. Why embarrass yourself with an irrelevant option?

Eh. The first couple chapters were decent, rather tongue-in-cheek re: Lyon's seduction of Mary, the virginal housemaid. I was hoping the story would continue in that mock-up Fanny Hill style. But then the plot flew out a nearby window & turned into a string of sex scenes (literally one per chapter, with 18 chapters total...you do the math :P), each one blatantly checking a box on the kinky checklist. Voyeurism; femmeslash; menage a trois; exhibition; orgy; dildos; pornographic art; sex with a rescuer; sex with a creepy villain; sex with a virginal young soldier; near-sex with an unknown sibling; blah blah blah. To make matters worse, plot abruptly returns in the last quarter of the book, when Mary is revealed as the high-born, long-lost sister of some aristocrat, who (inexplicably) forces her to marry the orgy villain...only to be stopped when Lyon walks back into the last 3 pages & declares his love (surprising, that, given his long-term adoration was equal to Johnny Ringo's sorrow over Morgan Earp's demise...that is, not sincere in the least). Then the brother suddenly decides it's ok if she marries Lyon instead. Um. Ok. Sure thing, champ. Another casualty of wedging too much sex into a plot that could've been better with more time spent on THE STORY, rather than weeping cunnies & pointed nipples. Too much coitus = zzzz.
