Book three and our time-travellers, Chloe and Cheftu, find themselves in ancient biblical Israel as vassals of King David. This was my least favorite of the three books so far in the series. Chloe enters this story as a mermaid goddess among the Philistines. Cheftu enters on an island with another time-traveller, RaEm. When discovered they sail to Egypt during the reign of Pharoah Akhenaten (who single-handedly wrecked the Egyptian empire). RaEm, in the guise of a man, becomes Smenkhare and co-Pharaoh. When Chloe and Cheftu eventually find each other, they both are slaves in Canaan. Cheftu is asked to help reclaim the gold of the Exodus; and while he is gone, Chloe uses her modern-day strategic skills to help young King David conquer Jerusalem. Through these acts both win their freedom from slavery and become close to King David and his leaders. They encounter many biblical characters in interesting ways and situations. The author has been very imaginative while filling the "negative spaces" of history - for me an uneasy interpretation of myth and history.
