School may be out, but that doesn't mean I want The Five-Year-Old to lose ground when it comes to her new-found reading and writing skills. Not having fixed plans for most mornings this summer means that I can let The Five-Year-Old have extra reading time before bed without worrying that it's cutting in on her sleep. And it just so happens that her favorite thing to do in that time is practice her writing. This book is great for that sort of self-directed learning. The goal for each page is simple: Learn to write the letter, first by tracing it, then by writing it on your own. The instructions are clear and consistent from page to page, which means The Five-Year-Old knows what she needs to do in each section, without having Mommyo pop up the stairs all the time to guide her. I'm Going to Write! features plenty of room for The Five-Year-Old to write and simple, bright and engaging illustrations to hold her attention as she does it. All of which keeps The Five-Year-Old turning page after page, practicing her writing in complete contentment (and learning to spell a few words along the way).
