Poor Haley. She's a loser at her school, people throw things at her at lunch, and to top it all off, she's got psychokinesis -- she can move things with her mind. Thus, accidents literally follow her wherever she goes. But she has a new chance at a new school, and she's determined to reinvent herself as popular, no matter what it takes. And it works! Her new clothes and self-control over her power get her noticed by "The Hive," the four most popular girls in school. Haley's on top of the world, until ANOTHER new girl appears -- Alexa, who is just as determined to be popular, and much meaner than Haley. To make matters worse, Alexa has psychokinesis, too -- and unlike Haley, she's not afraid to use it. I found this to be a totally charming graphic novel, breezy and funny, with nothing objectionable in the content. It really hits upon the trials and tribulations of middle school, especially for girls. The drawing is very manga-influenced, which will hold appeal. I remember from reading one of the "Blue Monday" books that Chynna Clugston-Major was a big fan of 80's rock, and you will see that here, too. However, I appreciated some of the modern touches -- instead of lunch money, a bully demands that a kid hand over his iPod; a teacher has a fit when a text message goes off in his class. Great middle school recommendation, nothing edgy to worry about as with some graphic novels, might be interesting paired with The Plain Janes, and I can't wait to read the next one! And...hooray for gals making comics!

Queen Bee, by Chynna Clugston- Major, Graphic Novel, Fiction. This book is based at a middle school. Haley has always been considered as a 'loser'. Suddenly, she realizes that there is something different about her. She can move things with her mind! Her mother has told her that it is a gift, and she should just ignore it, but she can't. Soon, her mother tells Haley that they're moving into the city, which made her extremely happy so she can get a chance to be popular! At her new school, she makes many new friends and fits in with the popular crowd called "The Hive". Soon however, another girl named Alexa arrives, and takes over the spotlight. When they first meet, they both realize they have the same psychokinetic powers. Instead of bringing the two girls closer together, they become enemies. Haley meets a guy named Jasper, who helps her keep calm about Alexa. At a talent show, the two girls go head first proving to the other who's the best. Haley is adopted, and when she was a little girl her biological mother gave her a necklace. Inside are two pictures, one of her, and one of another girl who she assumes is her sister. Does she ever find out who her sister really is? Read the book to find out! I have to admit, this is a pretty kiddish book, but I was surprised about the ending. I won't say what it is, but after reading this book I was curious if there was a sequel. I thought the book was just going to be about two girls fighting to be the most popular girl in school, but its more than that.
