Review # 1 was written on 2011-04-01 00:00:00 Uyguyiu Uoipok The subtitle is 50 Must-Have Books with Lesson and Activities That Build Skills in Vocabulary, Comprehension, and More. I have to confess I haven't read the whole book--some of the lessons seem to be padded with dialogues between the author and a student. But I wanted to review it anyway, because, although I don't agree with some of her choices, I think the list of 50 Must-Have books would be a godsend to a first grade teacher beginning to build a classroom library. (Guides are available also for PreK, Kindergarten, and Second Grade.) The Chapters are: Welcome Back to School! 10 Must-Have Books to Kick Off the School Year; Let's Celebrate! 10 Must-Have Books for Rainy Days, Birthdays, and Other Special Days; Rocking and Rolling with Words: 10 Must Have Books with a Beat; How Much? How Long? How Many? 10 Must-Have Books for Teaching Math and Science; Purple Coats, Purple Purses, Typing Cows, and Talking Dogs: 10 Must-Have Books for Teaching Reading and Writing. A few of the titles she proposes are: _Owl Moon_ by Jane Yolen, _Tops and Bottoms_ by Janet Stevens, _When I Was Young in the Mountains_ by Cynthia Rylant, _Something BIG Has Been Here_ by Jack Prelutsky, and _Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin_ by Lloyd Moss. |
