I normally stay far, far away from non-fiction biographic novels, but I came to the conclusion that I needed to read at least a few in my lifetime. This novel was easy to read and comprehend, making it a good book for anyone who wanted to do a quick brush up on their African American history. I liked this novel for the simple way in which it was written because it made the story of the life of Frederick Douglass a lot easier to follow than a text book would have been. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to learn more about Frederick Douglass, especially students who were trying to write a paper about him. I would not make the students read this novel, even though it discusses racial inequality and discrimination, which are good topics to discuss among students who might be struggling with those very things. However, these topics can also be found in other novels that explore the human condition in deeper, more fulfilling ways. For that reason, I would not require students to read it, but would keep it on my bookshelf in case they wanted to look more into the life of Frederick Douglass or use the novel for a report. Warnings: Drugs: No Sex: No R&R: There is racial discrimination Language: No Violence: Black people are beaten and sometimes killed

Very informative, makes me excited to read his actual book and not just a simplified version of it. Hopefully it did the same for my children.
