For someone who is supposedly a big deal in the couponing world, this book was lackluster. What little knowledge I have of supermarket savings I gained from TLC's show Extreme Couponing and it's corresponding blog. I learned more on that blog than I did in this book. It's an extremely basic book for someone who, presumably, has no idea what a coupon is and how it's used. Frankly, the most information I gleaned from this text is in the glossary, where she breaks down common message board terms like "blinkie" and "BOGO" (buy one get one). Thankfully, this was a library book or else I'd put my saving skills to the test by asking for a refund.

I really enjoyed this book for the coupon and rebating ideas. However, I do have to disagree with this nice lady on a few points. #1- Samtur suggests buying brand name only because brand names can afford to provide coupons and they usually end up cheaper. Here in the buckle of the Bible belt, generics are still cheaper than the sale brand name with a coupon. So while I agree that shopping smart is best on this topic, sometimes it's just not the better buy. #2- Regarding rebates, Samtur expresses that she earns $2500 per year in rebating. However, you have to buy the products initially. If they are not on sale or it's not a product you need in the first place, why not just pass on it? If I don't need an item, I'm not going to shell out $5 just to get a $3 rebate. Even if the item is a full rebate, I still have to pay postage and use my time to fill out the rebate card to essentially have a wash of $5 for the $5 I spent at the store. I write freelance and edit for freelance sites. Time is money to me and I just don't have it sometimes to sit and fill out a rebate card for a shampoo that I don't even like just because there is a rebate on it. I only rebate on things I absolutely need or know I can gift. #3- Just because an item is on sale or I have a coupon for it, I'm not going to buy it if I don't need it. The best way to save money is to not spend it on items you don't need or even want just because it's discounted 80%. As a woman with me, my husband, and a 3 month old, I don't need 15 bottles of fabric softener just because they're on sale and I have a coupon. That would last me 5 years and there is certain to be another bargain sale or coupon event during that 5 years. As I said, there is a lot of helpful advice in here though. I think the planning chapters have had the most effect on my shopping habits. She really is good at what she does and this is an easy read to get through.
