She specifically focuses on the tensions between nation-building (asibiya) and assimilation (ummah). Asibiya refers to Islamic movements that were more nationalistic in scope, focusing on the uplift and development of African descent Muslims in North America. Ummah or "community" focuses on the trend for African descent Muslims to consider itself as part of the global community of Islam, and in many instances, imho, subordinate itself to non-Black Islamic movements. This text gives a great overview of how these groups developed and outlining their beliefs and connections/competing interests. |
