Review # 1 was written on 2010-09-08 00:00:00 Bill Mickle This is a stunning piece of work. For FAR too long, this topic has been poorly handled by academics and practitioners alike. Given its centrality to our current understanding of theatre and acting, not to mention our own more general western cultural evolution, there has long been a need for someone to set the record straight. And finally we have Mel Gordon providing invaluable detail, insight, references and myth-dispelling. Written with utter authority but also accessibility, it's an undeniable must-read for anyone interested in anything from Russian theatre to Hollywood movies. ***** |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-10-01 00:00:00 Fern Fladell Great book that really made me think about women creatives and how they're treated in the world of Classical theatre. Complete with great pictures from the productions of the women interviewed, this is a great book for those who have a double major in theatre and gender studies, or simply fans of British theatre. |
