A beautifully--and most of the time to the point--illustrated gallop through English history. Because the viewpoint is English, this book gave me a different way of looking at world history from the American and Catholic views I got from US educational systems. The author tossed around a lot of names which I'm sure any British schoolchild would recognize, but a few of them went right over my head. And what a difference 42 years has made! The author firmly states that the British empire only arose from a altruistic desire to assume responsibility for these poor backward peoples until they were educated and grown up enough to take care of themselves, which unfortunately has not yet really occurred. Those people should have been grateful for the loving care they received from a disinterested, beneficent superior people. I also learned that one of the benefits of the British defeat of the Dutch is that they were able to take over the slave trade from them, apparently to the benefit of all concerned, except maybe the Dutch. But these jarring notes were very few, and the book is overall a fun and engrossing read. Is it fair to blame someone probably born 100 years ago for being a man of his time? Maybe, but I don't know.
