What Tillich did TO Theology is as consequential as his contribution FOR Theology. Obviously, he found that he was obliged to answer Schleirmacher, Von Harnack, and others, who in their surrender to the enlightenment and particularly to Darwin in the latter half of the nineteenth century, gave way to Hegel's phenomenology of history. But Tillich adopted Kierkegaard as his way out. This book didn't go into detail about the angst that he endured, but it is my belief that he faced a continual crisis with his faith. It was all he could do but believe, but he couldn't unbelieve. Tillich therefore, adopted his famous phrase, God above God; The Ground of Being. The nineteenth century was, at least in my view, the decline of western culture and although we now know so many things that have been answered in the twentieth and now, twenty-first century, we still reel from the confusion. Tillich was a man of faith, almost as if he only heard God from the far reaches of existential time. The man worked at it and suffered over it.

It is a good compilation of extracts of various works of Paul Tillich, but like a lot of theologians and philosophers of that period, at times his writing is almost impenetrable. Tillich is at his best and clearest in his Wartime Radio Broadcasts into Nazi Germay or his sermons. If you want to read Tillich that is the best place to start and in the broadcasts you get a clear view of his opposition to Hitler and why he fled quickly after Hitler came to power. But even then you wont fully appreciate the complex human being that was Paul Tillich.
