The selection and the argumentative vim showcased here make it a fascinating read but also a less-recommendable point of departure in the topic of music and emotions. The writing is a bit abstruse, yet the arguments and conclusions are delightfully cogent. However, the structure of the criticism kind of undermines the credibility of the theories so early on (and perhaps decisively so - difficult to say) that it's a struggle to finish each chapter with unabated interest.

Comprises a critical review of aesthetic theories related to musical meaning, above all those by Meyer, Langer or Schopenhauer... generally it just negates them and doesn't bring much of any new solution to the discourse. But for getting the general picture of the topic it is definitely good reading and quite easy-to-get for a casual reader without deep knowledge of the philosophy and arts theory
