Review # 1 was written on 2014-03-25 00:00:00 Michelle Plataslipson A bit of a combination of Hansel & Gretel, Goldilocks, and Little Red Riding Hood (sort of), this folk tale is about a little girl who gets lost while berry-picking. When she comes across a little house, she decides to sleep inside and try to find home in the morning. But the house is inhabited by a big bear (one who wears a bright red military uniform complete with tassels, for some unknown reason) who decides to keep her there as his personal handmaiden and threatens to cut her up and cook her in a stew if she tries to escape. The unnamed girl uses her wits (those olden-times girls sure has a lot of wits about 'em...) to outfox the bear and return home to her loving grandparents. The illustrations are fun in the typical Galdone style. Well, except for that bright military uniform, which threw me off and the 2nd graders I read it to, as well. They asked why he was wearing it. Me: No clue. Kid: Maybe he's King of the Bears. Me: May be. As good an explanation as any, I suppose. |
