though i've gotten through but a few chapters, it's already been an enormous help. i promise to write more on this once i've gotten through a bigger chunk of it, but i'm fairly certain this could help anyone looking to do any type of freelance work. just one of the many helpful things are some pre-made forms that can be downloaded and used for your own business.

For a 2014 edition, it’s quite dated in parts, referring to CD-ROMs at one point and barely touching social media. Also, it is primarily informed by a background in traditional/print design and advertising, making barely any reference to digital/interactive/UX/UI. Lots of typos too. I was ready to give a three-star review. So where did the fourth star come from? The true value lies in the comprehensive insights into the point of view of the creative business owner. This is a book about the serious and mundane details involved in professional practice. No sexy theory of style, craftsmanship or creativity itself here. This book will give you a peak into the truth: Do you have what it takes to make it on your own? In short, if you don’t want to develop the somewhat antithetical roles of marketer/salesman/bookkeeper/etc. in addition to your creative side, you do not have what it takes to be independent. However, if you can accept (and enjoy) spending less time making stuff and more time on interpersonal professional obligations, then you can be a freelancer. *** Supplemental: Another reason I gave the fourth star? Clients are mostly given a pass, but the occasional scathing review of clients as “unsophisticated” and/or “insecure” made my heart sing a little. I felt vindicated and validated. I knew it wasn’t just me. 😜 *** Second supplemental: The guidelines in this book apply to all creatives, not just freelancers. So it really surprised me to see that, if I had been given this book to read when I was in high school, I would never have become a graphic designer. I would have studied something else. Like library science.
