Solid word craft here, but not a lot to which I connect. I'm hanging on to it, though, because I expect to be moving to a less urban area next year and this might help provide a point of entry. This collection did get me writing again. "The middle age you wouldn't wait for now falls on me, white as a caterpillar tent, ... lending a rakish permanence to the idea of going on without you." "We are growing into one sex, a little leathery but loving."

At her best, Kumin is absolutely fascinating. I am particularly fond of the "Hermit" sequence from "Up Country". But she can also be lazy, tactless, weirdly inarticulate, or sometimes (yuck) precious. Scattered intermittently throughout this generous collection are the would-be contents of a slimmer volume I could wholeheartedly recommend.
