Review # 1 was written on 2017-07-16 00:00:00 Jon Stran I was terribly disappointed in this book. As the final selection for my Environmental Ethics course, I was expecting a solid argument for Christian humanism, an argument that I have not seen persuasively made within environmental philosophy at this point. (There's probably quite a few out there, I just haven't read them.) Unfortunately, Thomas Derr delights in ad hominem arguments and misreadings of other people's texts. And when corrections to his often factually incorrect points are made (as they are in a response piece in this volume by James Nash), Derr tends to ignore them and to suggest that those who disagree with him are merely willfully clinging to their own opinions through either fear or sentimentality. Furthermore, he doesn't explain how his alleged humanism fits in with his particular use of Scripture as all-authoritative in the realm of knowledge. Basically, his argument is that the two or three passages he decides to focus provide the basis for being completely anthropocentric, and we can ignore anything else in the Bible about nature. (And God, too, it would seem - he doesn't bother trying to defend himself against theocentric positions.)

Review # 2 was written on 2014-12-25 00:00:00 Michael Downs The political explication of Vattimo's (Rortian) Heideggerianism, viz., the concept of Verwindung (distortion). In hindsight, I should have read The Adventure of Difference first, which provides the exegetical and theoretical legitimization of this work.
