Pretty straightforward book with the majority of the book being book recommendations. The greatest thing I got out of this book is the many great quotes from historical figures on why we should read.

Interesting, stuffy, very self-satisfied. I was looking for research about reading, what Krashen calls "Free, Voluntary Reading." Didn't find that but I did find lively discussions about books and active reading. The author included an essay by Clifton Fadiman about active reading...something every student should be able to do. I remember having lively conversations with my texts...even calling Mr. Rochester in JANE EYRE A 'JERK'. I enjoyed the discussions of the books Katona believes we should all read, and LOVED the reading quotes! other than that this was a really light-weight... "We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading" -- B.F. Skinner!!
