Review # 1 was written on 2008-09-23 00:00:00 Anna Kuznyetsova I have fallen in and out of love with this book. Great if you want a very brief introduction to number theory. Not so awesome if you want to understand it. Manfred Schroeder does a lot of handwaving and "I'll leave the proof to the reader"s, which is terrifying for somebody trying to learn basic concepts. Also, he uses a lot of different conventions and naming schemes than others, so it makes it difficult to find other information about certain topics elsewhere. That said, I haven't found other number theory books that cover basic concepts without going into incredible mathematical detail. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-03-14 00:00:00 Gloria Hinds Gildea swings between arid detail and rich morsels of insight. All in all worth reading, providing a good understanding of how France has redefined itself--and been redefined--since World War II. |
