Review # 1 was written on 2009-07-29 00:00:00 Gary Moore I love this book, although I'm not a huge fan of the ending. Monardo's writing more than makes up for the abrupt ending, though. It's lyrical and lovely, and I think the author is brave in creating characters who are very flawed, who the reader might not necessarily like at first reading. |
Review # 2 was written on 2007-07-03 00:00:00 Jason Austin A tough book to read, as the characters are not entirely likeable, which can be a stumbling block. However, they are engaging and memorable. I found in my reading that those who committed some of the worst acts were easier to forgive, and ultimately be sympathetic towards, versus those who passed judgment or were self-destructive without hope. One of the main characters is a retired dancer turned teacher, and I sometimes found her parts lacking in authenticity. Perhaps this is because the novel is told in third person, getting close to certain characters at points and then switching to others. But at times, Mary, the former dancer, sounded too amateurish to me, or inconsistent with the dancers I know/knew. Overall, though I think the book is about the perilous nature of human relationships, and on that account, it is wonderfully sad, bittersweet and ultimately rewarding. |
