Review # 1 was written on 2017-02-06 00:00:00 Jer Flores Got this to read John McPhee's account of a Arthur Ashe-Clark Graebner match and was completely underwhelmed. He uses the trope of writing sentences that mimic the play of tennis - they come at you in quick staccato blasts and I felt like ducking. He also purports to get inside their heads as they play; yeah, right. I did enjoy was a trio of essays on a Suzanne Lenglen-Helen Wills match, by Larry Englemann, James Thurber & Helen herself. Fascinating set (heh) of perspectives - the beyond interesting backstory, the match, and of course Helen's take. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-03-26 00:00:00 Julie Ford Edward Abbey was one of the good ones. A lover of the desert southwest, an anarchist, a dirty old man, and a fine writer with a sense of humor and outrage. This is a good collection from his books of fiction, non-fiction and essays. |
