This is the sequel to forgotten vows. Though this is a stand alone, and you can read it as such, it makes some references to the previous book that might be a bit confusing for someone who has not read it. This is the story of the kidnapped little sister of the Hero in the first book. She was kidnapped 25 years ago when she was 3. She has been living a hand to mouth existence with her son, at the same time running away from an abusive ex-husband. The sheriff in the first book is the Hero of this book and is the one who finds her (through fingerprints) and brings her, and her son, back to her millionaire brother. They have a mini reunion when she arrives but before they can settle in, the brother and his wife need to fly off to Switzerland for some urgent surgery. The brother and wife are the H and h of the first book and she was badly injured in that one. The sheriff promises to watch over the heroine and her son while brother is away. A lot of back story comes out as the H and heroine explore their deepening relationship. There is some mystery with her adoptive parents who didnt quite treat her lovingly. We find out later, that they paid the kidnapper for her and produced a fake birth certificate. The heroine has a lot of trauma to overcome because of her identity crisis and by never being loved by her adoptive parents nor her ex-husband. The Hero also has angst from his stint in the military- all would have been good except I they kept going around in circles with this theme, it just got annoying and repetitive. It me not you, I cant love you because Im too damaged....blah blah blah... SPOILERS: Her adoptive parents and ex show up in the town, obviously with intent to reconcile so they can milk her for some of her new found millions. Im glad she made it clear that they would be getting zilch from her. At last a heroine with a bit of backbone. Anyway her ex-father in law turns out to be the kidnapper who killed her real parents and sold her to the adoptive parents. Her slimy ex didnt know about it since he was also just a kid at the time. And though he is still the father of her son, she also made it clear to him that he will not have a cent from the millions which will be kept in trust for her son. Available on Open library, together with the first book, so its quite convenient.

3.25 stars This book left me with mixed feelings. One the one hand it dealt with heavy issues and was complex on the other that was depressing as hell. I have read and enjoyed another book by this author that dealt with fairly complex issues as well, a mentally ill child and the toll it took on a marriage. However, this one was just a downer. The heroine is a single mother who has been on the run from her abusive law enforcement ex forever. Then, the hero comes into her life, telling her an incredible story of a kidnapped heiress, illegal adoption and a brother waiting to welcome her home. The heroine's son who is 12 has major issues having been abused by his father physically and I felt they were never really dealt with, and was something that required therapy. Even the atmosphere the book created was gloomy. When I read the Desire line I expect something more fun and lighter and feel this should have been a Special Edition title.
