Review # 2 was written on 2016-03-10 00:00:00 John Smith [ Hero drives her back, but returns because he's worried about her. He brings her food and talks her into returning to the ranch. The first day heroine cleans out horse stalls and blacks out. Hero takes her to hospital and she gets antibiotics for a respiratory infection. There is a long period of recovery where we learn about the heroine's abusive childhood where her mother exploited her daughter in order to shoplift and steal from friends. Then the heroine is raped at 16 and the mother blackmails the rapist for money. Heroine has a boatload of issues, the hero pries out of her one by one. The heroine realizes she has no moral compass and has no sense of what is a big transgression and what isn't. (She gets up at 3:00AM to drive forty minutes to the truck stop to buy breakfast for the hero and then passes it off as her own cooking - she lives in an agony of guilt about this until she confesses).Hero is appalled that she is that afraid of disappointing him. The housekeeper goes on vacation so hero and heroine have to learn to cook together. There are references to the heroine being a problem between her stepbrother and his now wife, and the heroine is relieved of that guilt when she and the hero visit them. If I had read the earlier book, this scene might have made more sense - it really stuck out in this narrative, since I no real concept of these characters and if it was a big deal for them to forgive her. The big showdown is when the heroine's toxic mother returns and tries to get money out of the heroine to keep quiet about her rape so the hero won't be put off by "soiled goods." (Heroine is rich because her stepfather left her money - and nothing to his wife, the heroine's mother) Hero already knows all the heroine's secrets. They stand together against the mother. Mother flounces. Hero gives heroine a diamond ring. HEA. (hide spoiler)]
