Re A Daughter for Christmas - Cathy Williams gets the penultimate book in the Nanny Wanted series for November 1998 in HPlandia. The book starts with the 21 year old h desperately trying to figure out a way to keep a roof over her niece's head. 18 months before the story starts, the h's older sister and brother in law were in a fatal car accident. As the h's older sister lay dying, she told the h that her niece was the result of a one night stand the h's sister had about a year after she married. Apparently the sister found out her husband was infertile and took herself off to Majorca and had a one nighter in desperation. She went home pregnant and patched things up with her husband and then had a little daughter. But the sister couldn't leave her only relatives without someone knowing the truth. Since the h is all alone now except for her niece, it is up to the h to decide what to do. Initially the h thought things would be fine, she was a student getting a graphic art degree and her sister and brother in law had their own business. But the business went bankrupt and the h had to get an office job to make ends meet. Now the bank is going to foreclose on the family home and the h has no choice but to approach her niece's bio-father for help. He is a big time business guy from a very wealthy family. The h and H meet in his traditional English club and the H is very angry and blames the h for her sister not informing him of his paternity. He makes all manner of h con-artist and gold digger accusations and the h feels really terrible, then he meets the little niece and the resemblance between the H and the girl is quite startling. Even tho the h is the girl's legal guardian, the H soon takes over everything and the h is in no position to fight him. He moves the h and his daughter into his house and we get an evil wanna be OW, the daughter of one of the H's parent's old friends, living in the basement. It is the standard OW trying to threaten the h day at the office, but for the most part, the h just ignores her. What is harder to ignore is the spontaneous roofie kisses that randomly occur from the H. The h doesn't like the H grabbing and groping her, she knows she is way, way out of his league, but proximity and the H's attempts at dictating every facet of the h's life lead to a big lurve club swinging moment. The h was overwhelmed with the lurve force mojo, but immediately realizes her heart is in danger and that giving into passion was a mistake. So she tells the H to pretend it never happened and then we get the peculiar courting of a CW HP H. The H manages to take the h and his daughter to his family country manse for Christmas, while his courtship consists of getting the h to take dictation and type letters for him - CW loves her workaholic H. The h hates the office work and would rather be doing art and decorating for Christmas instead. The wanna be Evil OW makes one last attempt to snare the H, but he is pretty cold when he throws the woman out and tells her he will never be interested in taking up where he left off when they were kids. The Evil OW storms off in defeat, but not before vowing she will have revenge. The Evil OW calls the H's estranged parents to inform them about their grandchild in retaliation, so the H and h and the niece are happily decorating for Christmas when the H's parents show up. The H's mother is kinda outraged and the H's dad is a happy the H has a kid. To the h's surprise, the H announces he is marrying the h and a whole new battle is set to begin. The h thinks the H is offering a convenient business arrangement and the H tries to play it that way at first, but when the h declares that she is only getting married to someone who loves her, the H steps up to the plate. He finally explains that since she moved in she has turned his life around, he is really fascinated and interested in her and he doesn't know how it happened, but he is totally in love and he is convinced he can teach the h to love him too. He even throws in a resumption of art school promise and his backing in whatever career the h wants to do, if she will just marry him and give him a chance to prove his love. This is the best Christmas present ever, according to the h, because she fell in love with the H way back in chapter five and has been fighting the attraction ever since. The H and h are happy and ready to plan the wedding, but they have to tell the niece that the H is her bio dad. In true HPlandia HEA Pink Sparkly Wrap Up Style, the niece doesn't even bat an eye when the H's bio dad-hood is revealed and everyone is happy and sleigh bells are ringing for another Merry Christmas HP HEA. This one was cute and the H was suitably bossy while the h did her best not to be a doormat. The Evil Wanna Be OW got some comeuppance and the plot moppet niece did all the right plot moppet moves at all the right times. If you can get over the h and the sister sleeping with the same guy, albeit years apart, this is one is very funny on the bantering between the H and h and nice, fluffy HP Christmas outing.

This story was a bit choppy and the hero was aloof so the reader couldn't get who he was but not bad. Heroine was great, and stepped up well to raise her niece and never let her pride dictate what was best for her. I say read for the holidays.
