3.25 stars This was a very low-key romance by this author. The h/H are cops sent on an undercover assignment to break open a baby selling ring. They aren't any fireworks or bad guys hiding in the bushes, just loads of boring setting the cover scenes. These two become lovers and grow close, heroine confides in him about her foster-care experience; he about giving up his dream of medical school to help his parents. I would call this a realistic book where characters talk about financial implications of going back to school and waiting to start a family.

Tess is a bleeding-heart liberal who grew up in a hippie commune. Nick is a conservative lawyer hellbent on making partner. If only they'd known how different they were before they fell in love... This book wasn't really quite a 4 for me because I found both Nick and Tess a bit obnoxious and closed-minded. I would have liked to see more of the side romance of the best friends (although Crusie does an excellent job structuring it in small fragments). Also, I felt like it was in many ways a reworking of Crusie's The Cinderella Deal. I mean, obviously this is a classic romance plot, but it seemed a bit like cheating for the same author to use such similar tropes twice.
