3.25/5 **This review contains some spoilers. Well, what we've got here... Misunderstanding with a capital M. Instant attraction. Strong sexual tension. Secret baby. Drama. Redeemable hero. And... Super duper groveling! I really did enjoy reading this enemies-to-lovers story and finished it in two sittings. I liked the hero, Bran, a lot. He believed that Cassie cheated on the research and that she took advantage of his sister. He thought the worst of her before he even met her. He despised her and believed that she was a sly person, yet there was no denying the strong attraction he felt toward her. I liked that he'd never hidden his desire for her and he told her his intentions upfront. He wanted her to stay with him despite his distaste for and distrust of her. Bran was a jerk, I really couldnt say otherwise. I lost count of how many times I wanted to scream at him to stop treating Cassie like dirt. But wait till you see how he redeemed himself. I found that it wasnt hard for me to warm up to this reformable man eventually. Cassie, on the other hand, was a disappointing character. I enjoyed her character just fine until she left Bran. To be honest, I had no problem with her running away from him. She couldn't sleep in the same bed every night with a man who told her clearly that he didn't trust her. Good. That was good. I agreed with her. If it were me, I couldnt and wouldnt either. Her indecisiveness, though, drove me crazy. I didn't like that she couldn't make up her mind whether she wanted him or not. How she kept denying her feelings, pretending his being around didnt affect her, and pushing him away only increased my annoyance at her. Being strong is one thing, but being stubborn is another. And in the end, I couldnt care less about this woman. Nevertheless, the groveling part was very impressive. I liked it and I think it was another thing that helped save the book from getting 2 stars from me. Overall, it was an ok read. I enjoyed it for the most part.

Some good and some really bad in this romance. Hints of the madcap comedy The Awful Truth with a scene straight out of the movie gives this book three stars even if the hero and the heroine ran short. It starts with the heroine being fired because she was unjustly accused of forging scientific data or whatever the term is. One of her closest friends turns her back on her. A short week later the friends brother who also happens to be the agencys benefactor demands the h come take of her friend as his sister sees the h as a mother figure. The friend broker her leg, feels bad for not trusting the heroine, and must not be upset. Mistaken identity as the heroine is actually only 28. The H apparently hates and blames her for the fraudulent scientific data, his sisters accident and the recession, probably. The Hs sister has just dumped her fiancee because..who knows and that is apparently the heroines fault too. The Hs sister clinginess is a little disturbing, but she has minimal page time. The H, of course, lusts after the heroine, and, of course, HATES lusting after the heroine. The heroine, of course, cant stop herself from throwing herself in his arms even though he, of course, continues to treat her like dirt. I HATE THIS TROPE!!!!!!!!! HATE. H.A.T.E! The H strong arms the heroine into going to his stepmothers dinner party. You know, the stepmother that tried to bed him when he was a teen and altered his view of women forever. A million plus stars for the following scene where the heroine has had it with everyone, and makes a farce of the H, the stepmother and the other woman, the stepmothers mini-me minion, at the snooty party starting with pretending the stepmother was the Hs mother much to her fury and dismay. They finally have sex, and he sweetly says, I love you even though I still think you are a cheating, lying gold-digger. The h leaves. Yay, a backbone. Two years later the heroine has a new identity, a baby and not only a personality transplant but a brain transplant as well. Secret baby alert. Usually hs that hide their babies have good reason and I dont fault them, but I did this time. In fairness, she did call after the baby was born, but, yuck, the OW answered the phone. So that tells you who was NOT celibate. The H arrives in Oregon with the OW in tow, and there are burning glances from him and idiotic impulses from her. She hides her secret baby with her sister, and falls into bed. With the H eventually. Major points off as shes gone from a relatively weak heroine with a sense of humor to a really weak heroine out in her Oregon garden eating worms. When the H finds out about the secret baby he is not pleased about the betrayal, and the heroine gets a chorus of "I told you so's" and "Shame" from the OM and her sister. Lots of lust and passion from these two, and there is probably a second plot moppet on its way by the end of the book, but neither character was that likable by the end. Too bad as it had lots of potential.
