DPs are now meshing into 2-3 basic globs for me! This one is where the bff's big bad ranch owner brother is the H, who thoroughly disapproves of the h but she keeps going back for the staple insults. H named King check. Alpha Cowboy, huge Ranch owner check Chick magnet but long celibate- check Hs sister is the hs bff check Orphan Annie h, a model whod rather teach KG - check h displays cooking/secretarial/ general doormat skills - check h misjudged, labeled, abused - check H hateful and unwelcoming during her visits check h humiliated/banished but still keeps returning for more - check Contradictory statements and whiplash moods - check Local history talk - check One storm/sickness comforting scene gone south - check Feel my chest hair/pelt/underbrush scene check An accident/illness when the helpless h needs TLC and the H whisks her off to his ranch - check And... Oh but my asshat moves only cuz I loved you since you were jailbait and I was the creepy older guy who should have known better eyeroll!

"Darling Enemy" is the story of Teddi and King. Teddi our protagonist is an orphan, and spends her days modelling in NY in order to pay her rent. She has a slutty aunt with leechy boyfriend, whom she avoids. Her best friend and confidante is Jenna, her room-mate who has a brother- the ever brooding and handsome King- whom she has secretly lusted after and who hates her because he believes all models are sluts, and sluts are bad bla bla. When one morning before vacations, King is ranting about Teddi to Jenna, she overhears and is hurt, he sees it and then goes to verbally abuse her while using her attraction against her, and then makes fun of her while inviting her to his home so he can do it all over again. Yes, she agrees. We see the same cycle throughout the book- our hero having preconceptions and slut shaming the heroine- who hear this- is as expected a virgin, kissing her to push her away and further shame her, verbally chide her and suspecting her of having an affair with every man. He even believed her potential evil stalker over her. Until the end the push and pull game had happened x number of times, and even when I thought it ended- it was another cycle of running away and chasing.... Read this if you want your leads to behave like 17th century horny puritans. And this is a common trope in DP books, Ive read it SO MANY times before, but today.. NOPE. SWE 2.5/5
