[ The hero's mother ran him down with her car. He was a womanizer and she had had enough. Hero took the blame for the accident. His father went by the same name as the hero, so when the mother told her that Luke was a womanizer, she was referring to her husband, not the hero. (hide spoiler)]

Not as funny as other Ann Charlton books. I liked the gothic elements, with Luke's mother creeping around old mansion in a white nightgown, and unexplained fires and missing objects. The title refers to the H, and Charlton did a really great job of showing the H flipping from hot and cold seemingly from moment to moment. He was a golden boy tennis star who fell from grace and responded poorly to this adversity. 10 years on he still isn't well able to manage his anger. The H is wonderful. I loved the scene where she keeps herself from responding to a kiss by thinking of kitchen appliances, sinks, double sinks and finally with desperation garbage disposals. The wannabee OM/h's business partner was an ass and a callow twit and I pretty much hated him. I'm rooting for this couple but frankly I'm pessimistic, the idea that his mood swings and tendency to shake the h, at least 3x by my count, won't ever manifest again seems unlikely.
