Review # 1 was written on 2014-08-08 00:00:00 Robin Ayers A fascinating book, broadly researched in published sources, not well written. The great story of the work--the genesis of the Cossacks as peoples, their enlistment as agents of the Russian Empire, their loss of agency, and their demise at the hands of the Bolsheviks--eventually emerges for a patient reader. The author, unfortunately, lacks the talent for exposition, transition, and composition to make sense of the impressive factual material he marshals. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-10-02 00:00:00 Eric Lin Call it 2.75 stars -- very interesting but too detailed for what I wanted (I had been/was reading several novels involving Cossacks). Read most of this and skipped some bits. Learned that there are (or were) MANY different varieties of "Cossack." |
