Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-07 00:00:00 Zoila Arita I've seen complaints that the series got less interesting after the mangaka moved from serialization to just publishing in the graphic novels, and I can see where they're coming from--the cliffhangers for each chapter get pretty annoying, and the flow sometimes seems to lag. (Plus, they're not aging well--one can only care about Mai's flaily high school crush for so long.) But on the other hand, the move from serialization to tankobon also coincided with Inada and Ono upping the scare factor in the stories, so I've yet to really object. Plus, if the series had stopped at the end of the serialization, we wouldn't have gotten Yasuhara. And that would've been a crying shame. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-08-11 00:00:00 Allen Braswell This volume completes the "Cursed House" story arc. Very solid! Probably the scariest so far (I mean, I wasn't actually scared -- it seems like it would be pretty hard to make something really frightening in this format -- but the creepy elements were there) and with interesting folkloric stuff that I wasn't familiar with. Definitely more original than the haunted schools they keep getting called to. (Are haunted schools, like, the Japanese equivalent of the English murder-at-a-house-party stock theme, or what?) And it was interesting to see a story with Naru almost completely absent. |
