Review # 1 was written on 2016-10-16 00:00:00 Nigel Vise Weird tome. The title implies an overview of the creative process. However, the content within is more of a collection and categorization of elements that the author found striking. A more apt title would have been "Things that Are In Plays". I had trouble making sense of the organization of the book. The chapters are organized by literary devices, but the subtopics are jumbled together. For example, Chapter 4, "Exposition," has the following sub-topics: * Inspector Hound (Tom Stoppard's comedy) * Deep Background * Exposition by Contention * Expository Devices * Sweet Bird of Youth * Dear Brutus * Hedda Gabler * Exposition Equals Action * The Crucible The names of works and literary devices are all jumbled together. Plus, the sub-headings all use the exact same typeface, so it's impossible to intuit the hierarchy of the content (do Deep Background, Exposition by Contention, and Expository devices all belong under Inspector Hound? Or is Expository Devices the broader category to which Sweet Bird of Youth and Dear Brutus belong?) The author does show a deep knowledge of the content and has clearly spent a lot of time thinking about it. This book may not be the best vehicle for that knowledge. This book may be more rewarding for more dedicated students of the craft of playwriting. |
