Review # 1 was written on 2015-06-01 00:00:00 Solaiman Sowwan A wonderful introduction to this field! Bynum hits all the big names, and simultaneously gives an overview of this field but also provides the reader with the tools to research further, if he/she so wishes. This is hands-down one of the most helpful books I have ever read. So much of what I know about 19th-century science and medicine began with the overview I got from this book. I'm afraid I can't give much of an evaluation as to its enjoyability for the casual reader, as I read it purely for research purposes. My memory is that it's well-written, but very factual and to-the-point. If I had any critiques it would be that I was interested primarily in English and American medical history, and Bynum devotes equal time to French and German medical history. However, this is a conscious choice made because many of the most important medical advancements took place in these countries originally before making their way to England and America.
