Written in consultation with the surviving members of Stalin's family, Richardson looks at the different generations. It is not a look at Stalin himself, but rather those of his second wife, Nadezhda Alliluyeva. It looks at her parents, her siblings and herself, her children and their cousins. It shows how they went from being members of the most important family in the Soviet Union, to being arrested and denounced, and ultimately how they recovered from that. It gives a new dimension to the story of Stalin, and by looking at those around him gives new perspectives that are quite valuable to looking at his personal life.

Offers far more than most of my Russian history studies had taught me previously. Absolutely should be required reading for anyone interested in Russian studies. (I always keep it at-hand as I read anything else about the country for that era.)
