Review # 1 was written on 2013-02-07 00:00:00 Sovorn Chea Generally spot-on assessments of wine vintages from everywhere that matters peppered with personal anecdotes and trivia from his years in the wine trade. Caveat emptor, some Bordeaux notes are taken from bacchanals chez notorious fraudster Hardy Rodenstock. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-10-23 00:00:00 Raymond Allen For the consummate enophile this is a curious read. This is not a traditional book, but rather a wine catalog of Mr. Broadbent's personal tasting notes over his fifty year career. Indeed, Broadbent is a copious note-taker and he peppers his writing with some intriguing accounts of his jet-setting. You become acquainted with the likes of Hardy Rodenstock, Bipin Desai, the collecting interest of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Christan Sveaas (A Norwegian wine collector) and worldwide tastings held by Commanderie de Bordeaux, and charities such as Hospices de Beaune. Personally, I think he's a bit top-heavy on Bordeaux and thin on Burgundy except for DRC. He manages to do a decent job on Burgundian whites. The Italian section is an afterthought. But, let's be fair to him, his forte is in his dry sense of humor and his passion for winespeak. If you're not familiar with his style I recommend checking out decanter.com (A British wine journal) where he contributes. This makes a perfect coffee table book or cheatsheet for the neophyte wine geek. |
