Dr. Richman is a Professor of Religion at Oberlin University in the USA. She began learning Tamil as soon as she went to the University of Chicago; Sanskrit was an elective in her graduate course. She also benefited greatly from the guidance of Ku. Paramasivam, who was steeped in the Tamil texts and was just finishing a Ph.D. in Linguistics at the university.
