Card counting one of the keys that separates excellent from average bridge players. Modern bidding is pretty good--players will generally find a good contract if they're allowed to do so. And you'll often find the majority of the field in the same contract. So, making (or beating) that contract can make all the difference. And knowing where the cards are placed is key to picking the right finesse, knowing whether an end play is possible, even defining a deceptive play. This isn't an easy book to read. Having just finished it, I'm probably going to start over again from the start. But it feels like this may be the book that helps me move from being someone who counts when I think of it to someone who counts as a pattern. That's what I'd like to think, anyway. Karpin doesn't give many secrets, just common sense lessons on the use of what the player learns by listening to the bidding, knowing if a lead is likely to be fourth-best, and observing failure to follow suit. Some books, like To Bid or Not to Bid by Larry Cohen, can instantly change your game. The Art of Card Counting at Bridge isn't like that--at least for me. I have a feeling it'll take me a long time to integrate all of this into my game, but I think it'll be worth it. If you've read other books that make this easier, let me know.

For all bridge players with a sense of humor. If we had a 10 star scale I would certainly give this a 7.
