Review # 1 was written on 2011-08-21 00:00:00 Dennis Bell This has been my looterature for the past few months, and the second book in my employer's series of guides to NYC neighborhoods (Brooklyn was first; the Bronx is next, I believe) is a worthy servant in that role. What's my favorite thing learned, you ask? That's easy: I learned that the part of the borough where I spend by far the most time, where once Shea Stadium stood and now Citi Field stands, adjacent to the Flushing Meadows sites of World's Fairs in 1939 and 1964--that that whole area was once a dump, which Scott Fitzgerald branded the Valley of Ashes in The Great Gatsby. |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-05-16 00:00:00 Dave Douglass There is a real dearth of information about the history of Queens as a whole. Not surprising, since the borough is so oriented around individual neighborhoods. This book really gives interesting information - ALL IN ONE PLACE - about the history of the borough and its individual neighborhoods. Woohoo. |
