This is an academic work, but not dry, and each chapter can stand alone as they deal with different facets of the title topic. I was reading for the theory that the rise in popularity of men's fraternal organizations parallels the rise of the cult of True Womanhood, but I ended up going beyond that remit and reading the entire book as it was really interesting.

Incredibly interesting. Ever wondered about the origins of the particularly American flavor of aggressive, evangelical behavior/rhetoric/culture? Read this!
