This book is a great resource for those who want to learn how state and local government works! What could have been an ordinary, dry read was kept interesting and thorough through examining states via multiple lenses: state diversity, growth and decline, intergovernmental relations, constitutions/charters, and policy-making. Once those areas are cover the book delves into major actors that can shift trends in policymaking, like grassroots movements, interest groups, political parties, governors, state legislators, and local-level (city, county, townships) executives and legislators. Did you know that all cities and towns dont have mayors?? Some have city managers! A lot on the content is explained by giving a general overview, with a breakdown and comparison of difference between the states and why. It doesn't focus on just 'what is' but how things really operate (and deviate from the norm), what this means in the short-term, and the long-term. This book has a very good layout, and can keep the reader from getting lost in it; provided that the person is interested in the material at hand. It has a lot o examples, charts, graphs, and flowsheet-type diagrams to help the reader understand the structures of government and participating political actors in these processes. I wish more civic courses would use this book in their classes, and American citizens would have a greater understanding of their role and the roles of others in state and local issues that matter to them.

This text would be an acceptable overview of local politics for a 19 year old without any experience, but shallow for anyone with some life ex[experience.
