Review # 1 was written on 2017-03-02 00:00:00 Kenneth Maxfield Jr more of post-WWII book, this investigates the fallout of paxton's book, Vichy France, by telling the story of the trial of henri papon. it's nicely written, accessible for a history text, and addresses the larger issues that the trial posed for france - and the world. also does a nice job contextualizing the debate for those not familiar with it. while some may think papon got off too easily, others will think he didn't suffer enough. he was a high-ranking vichy officer who then got swallowed into the new regime, and his "black past" was ignored - like so many others. this never could have happened in germany, where they were forced to admit what they did during the holocaust - again and again. a good read. highly recommended, especially if you want to see how the history/memory debate is actually relevant. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-05-15 00:00:00 Timothy Spencer An excellent, highly readable account of French cultural life during the occupation and Vichy, full of interesting and vivid anecdotes. It is hard to tell how much of this is original research, but an excellent read, nonetheless, for those interested in this period. |
