Once again I'm wobbling between 3 stars and 4 stars. I've read this book several times and while I always find it enjoyable, I like it more at some times than others. Kristen has no memory before the last three years. Three years ago she woke up on an island, pregnant and apparently married to an abusive and controlling man. Since then her life has been hell, and only her baby daughter gives her any happiness. One night she reaches the end of her rope and manages to steal a boat and escape. Not knowing where to go, she heads for New Orleans, after finding a picture in her husband Salvador's study that resonates with her, which has a name and address on the back. She's hoping that the man in the picture will know her. Blu duFray is a shrimper, ex-thug for hire and all-round badass. Awhile back he rescued a bunch of kids who had been captured by slave traders, catching a bullet in the leg and a whole lot of media attention in the process. Since then he's been trying to live a clean, unobtrusive life where he doesn't have to look after anyone. When Kristen shows up, wanting to know if he recognises her (and why her husband has a picture of him on the office wall), he's initially put out by yet another person wanting something from him. But despite himself, he starts to feel curiosity about, and then protectiveness for, this terrified but gutsy young girl with bruises on her body and fear and fire in her eyes. Soon Blu finds himself sworn to protect Kristen from her husband, and to find out who she was before she lost her memory. This was a really nice book. I enjoy Wendy Rosnau's writing a lot - her stories are the perfect blend of sweetness and fire. I have to admit to being slightly uncomfortable with parts of the storyline - a 16-year-old girl being held captive by an older man who lies about her age and claims she's his wife for the next three years - but this was treated in such a way as to be very clear that it was a crime committed by an evil man. As Kristen is 19 at the time that the main events in the book take place, and Blu is 25, some people may object to this. Here in England, however, you're considered an adult in every way (except, for some reason, in nightclubs and car rental agencies) at 18, so this didn't bother me. I enjoyed the setting of this a great deal - I've always loved New Orleans, and reading a book that's set in one of the non-touristy parts of it (Algiers) was a pleasure and an eye-opening experience. I liked the supporting characters of Rose (Blu's mom), Margo and Ry (Blu's sister and brother-in-law), Jackson (Ry's detective partner) and Brodie and Mort (Blu's fishing crew), and will likely look out for books featuring these people in the future. Amanda, Kristen's two-year-old, was a sweetheart. Blu and Kristen themselves were a perfectly decent hero and heroine, although they didn't have the emotional impact that some of Ms Rosnau's characters have on me. I didn't quite understand the point behind the plot to catch Salva at the end - why not just wait for him to come after Kristen, rather than allow him to capture baby Amanda and make the switch? Overall, this was a very sweet book that I'd like to read again. I can't explain why I didn't feel the emotional connection that I do with some of Ms Rosnau's novels (Perfect Assassin and The Spy Wore Red are two where I was half in love with both heroes and heroines), but regardless of this absence, it was still very enjoyable. 3.5 - 4 stars.
