I enjoyed and learned a lot from some parts of the book, but overall the book remains too heterogeneous, and sometimes irritating. There is too much in there. It's written in an academic style, therefore it should provide in-depth reviews and in-depth thinking. It is indeed overall an excellent review of the scientific literature regarding the psychology of environmental issues. However it doesn't provide new theoretical insights nor new ideas for applications of behavior change in the field. In my opinion, there should have been one or the other. Otherwise, it could have been a good book for a lay audience but the style doesn't fit a lay audience. So... a good review, but not more. +++ What I liked: It is as if the authors googled 'psychology' and 'environmental problems' and fit in everything they found in the book. There is plenty of information from different psychological fields (cognitive, social, but also psychoanalytic and I wonder why...). A large range of topics are encompassed: The reasons underlying our pro-environmental behaviors as well as the exploration of the consequences of pollution and stress on our well-being. (but why put all of this in one same book? each topic is such a huge field of research...). An impressive reference list. And I am really glad some academics took on this challenge! ---- What I didn't like: The authors remain a bit too superficial and seem to remain still a bit helpless as to how to implement changes the most efficiently. The theories are exposed in parallel and there is a lack of integration of these theories and models. In fact, attempts to make general models for behavior change are being discussed in academic circles but the authors do not go that far. I miss this type of discussion, I miss the authors taking a position and giving clearer ideas both at the theoretical level and at the application level. I was irritated by the author's personal examples, too long and too simple. It felt as if they were very naive. I would have loved more examples showing successes and failures from large organizations that have tried to implement behavior change at larger levels (cities, industries, schools, universities, new buildings, hospitals... there is so much in the literature!). Instead, I had to read about how the authors asked a neighbor or a colleague to print less paper or take their own plastic bag for shopping. If they wanted to talk about themselves, then again, they should have gone much further: What about their own feelings, their sense of helplessness and anger associated with the fear of global warming; the impact of this fear on our relationships with all our environment... This was irritating to see that psychologists do not use psychology for their own behavior. I hope there will be a revised version addressing these problems, because it's a really fascinating field of research, and so needed! I will continue to look around for better books on this topic.
