Review # 1 was written on 2008-11-23 00:00:00 Craig Demyan Returning to this book. I gave it a low rating and said the predictions were wrong previously, but didn't understand fully why. He was correct the Great Depression did not return, but we did get a global recession soon after the book was published. Pretty bad timing - one reason why people think Keynesianism and neo-Keynesianism is basically dead. And it partly is. Only because we were applying just part of Keynes - stabilizing the economy in busts with deficits to manage aggregate demand, and creating more unemployment with austerity in the booms to avoid inflation. That hasn't proven very effective, and was made worse when we left the task of demand management largely to central banks. Rather, we should've been maintaining full employment at all times, letting public sector employment expand and contract through the respective busts and booms. Something like a JG and full employment policy, while also maintaining price stability. This is no silver bullet or solution for the boom-bust cycle. It would be a powerful counter-cyclical policy, rather than leaving it up to central banks and government officials to try and pump up or suppress general demand through their own political projects, you have the stabilizer in place automatically. (Should be a boon to conservatives when you put it like that)
