This book took me awhile because I savoured it, just dipping into it every now and again to read another short story. I particularly enjoyed reading it over these last few days in NZ while travelling. I got a buzz out of reading the Janet Frame story about the kids heading up to the reservoir against their parents' explicit say-so, the very next day we came across that same big reservoir. I loved the writing in each of these stories, very good style each story, a terrific selection.

Interesting stories of various aspects of colonial New Zealand life... logging, gold rush, sheep farms.... to more modern holidays with the family at the bach. Of course some stories were better than others, but that's always part of the bargain with short story collections. All in all, interesting insight for me as a foreigner.
