This was generally very good and provides a much needed examination of Masaryk-focused (or Castle-based) propaganda during the First Republic. While Masaryk was a largely admirable figure, and the First Republic did many things well, Masaryk was not a saint nor was his government flawless. The author is at her best digging into the various journalistic and publishing machinations attempted by Masaryk and his intimates, and she gives an excellent sense of the various characters involved in the power struggles of the 1920s.

A good historical account of the First Czechoslovak Republic. I used this for my thesis. Informative and objective. I was reluctant to read it at first because the reviews said Orzoff put a bad light on the leaders of the First Republic. I did not sense this, however, she did blatantly list their shortcomings. I recommend this for anyone wanting to learn more about the politics and history of the First Czechoslovak Republic.
