Review # 1 was written on 2009-06-11 00:00:00 Larocque Sylvain Reading this was a bit like that scarfing down that jumbo tub of popcorn that you buy at the movies against your better judgement. Enjoyable enough to read, but completely forgettable. And indistinguishable from one another. It felt like reading the same story over and over again. If you enjoy stories about 40-ish NASCAR fans with women problems, populated by characters ranging from (not-so-endearingly) quirky to outright oddball, you might enjoy this collection. Otherwise, give it a miss. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-03-04 00:00:00 Matt Gough Not quite as entertaining overall as his most-recent effort, but this collection nevertheless contains some really good short stories that in some ways foreshadows his later work. Several I liked very much, while a few others left me flat, but that is okay. But his frequent concentration on damaged individuals dealing with relationships is his strongest, and often funniest, angle. I wonder at times if Singleton perhaps struggled with drink. But I loved that so many of the stories focus on the truly weird people who inhabit my home state, South Carolina. |
